“Okay, who needs to go to the bathroom before we go?”
“Please put your shoes on. No, you can’t wear your sandals in the snow.”
“Does everyone have their water bottles? Are they full or empty?”
“Did you try to go to the bathroom? Are you sure? This is the last chance for a few hours.”
Familiar right? The common ‘leaving the house’ script that every household with kids has been through a million times.
It gets amplified when we’re going on a road trip for the holidays when everyone is extra excited. We will inevitably forget something or refuse to use the bathroom only to have to stop 10 minutes into our trip.
Laughing through the chaos does make it easier. Nothing is ever going to go perfectly, no matter how Type A you are there will be something that gets left off the to-do list.
That’s where I come in today. I can help you with one little piece of the puzzle:
Road Trip Snacks.
I don’t know about you, but I can absolutely tell the difference when my kids have eaten junk the whole day versus when we’ve balanced it out with at least some of our healthy, normal foods.
Being prepared with a bag of healthy snacks while we are on the road keeps their little digestive systems in their normal rhythms – and we all can agree that normal digestion leads to much better moods than disrupted digestion. (Plus then when we give in to the cute little jugs of chocolate milk at the convenience store, I don’t feel as bad.)
I’ve put together a list of some of our favorite no sugar added, no seed oil, no gluten snacks to toss to your kids in the backseat when the inevitable boredom or hangry whines begin.
- Solely Fruit Gummies
- Epic Jerky and Meat Sticks
- Gimme Seaweed with Olive Oil
- Pom Wonderful Pomegranate Seeds
- That’s It Bars
- Epic Pork Rinds
- Tillamook Sharp White Cheddar
- Hard Boiled Eggs
- Jovial Einkorn Crackers
- Bare Apple Chips
- Artisana Almond Butter Packets
I take what I feed my kids seriously. I love these snacks I have listed because the ingredient list is minimal, and I actually know what all the ingredients are. Added bonus: I like these snacks too.
Let me know if you have any favorite snacks for the road! Part 2 of this post coming with meals to pack to avoid fast food.
